He was an Assitant Coach at Lafayette High School before becoming the Head Football Coach at West Jessamine High School where he still remains the winningest coach in school history. Coach Johnson took the reigns at Paul Laurence Dunbar High School in 2018. He is currently in his 6th year at Dunbar and has already moved to 2nd behind Mike Meighan in school win totals.

Since arriving in 2018 Coach Johnson has established a culture of excellence. Under his 6 year tenure, he has guided Dunbar to:
- 1 Regional Championship
- 1 Regional Runner-Up,
- 1 Semi-Final Appearance,
- 3 District Championships
- 2 District Runner-Up Finishes.
- In his 7 years, Coach Johnson has helped over 40 athletes sign college scholarship offers.
